Understanding Different Battery Types
When it comes to diesel trucks, selecting the right battery type is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and longevity. There are several types of batteries available, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits.
Here are some of the most common battery types for diesel trucks:
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries: AGM batteries are a popular choice for diesel trucks due to their high cranking power. These batteries are maintenance-free and resistant to vibration and shock, making them ideal for the rugged demands of diesel engines.
Lithium Batteries: Lithium batteries represent a newer technology that offers several advantages over traditional lead acid and AGM batteries. They are significantly lighter, more efficient, require no maintenance, and have a longer lifespan. They are also a strong fit for deep cycle use in RV, marine, off-grid, and other sustained-power setups where steady discharge matters. In some cases, one battery can replace multiple batteries in a lead acid setup, making them a powerful and reliable choice for diesel trucks.
Flooded Lead Acid Batteries: Flooded lead acid batteries are a traditional type of battery still widely used in diesel trucks. They are relatively inexpensive and offer good cranking power. However, they require regular maintenance and can be heavy, which may not be ideal for all applications. Also, flooded lead acid batteries are more prone to spills and leaks and have a shorter lifespan than AGM and lithium batteries.
Group 31 Lithium Battery: A Group 31 lithium battery is a powerful option for diesel trucks that need strong starting performance in a common heavy-duty battery size. Group 31 refers to the battery’s physical size, so it is often used in trucks, commercial vehicles, RVs, and other high-demand applications. Group 31 batteries, as designated by the BCI Group label, have a specific set of dimensions at 13 x 6.8 x 9.44 inches (330x173x240 mm). This Ionic Lithium Diesel Starter Battery provides 1280Wh of energy for various applications.Compared to traditional Group 31 lead-acid or AGM batteries, a lithium version is usually much lighter, charges faster, lasts longer, and provides more consistent power. For diesel truck owners who want reliable cranking power without the extra weight and maintenance of older battery types, a Group 31 lithium battery can be a strong upgrade. Group 31 batteries often range from around 75Ah to well over 100Ah, depending on the battery chemistry, brand, and design. Most 12V Group 31 lithium batteries have a nominal voltage of 12.8V (including the Ionic Lithium 12V Group 31 Heavy Duty Diesel Starter Battery).
Benefits of Lithium Batteries Over AGM
Lithium batteries have several benefits over lead acid and AGM batteries, making them the ideal choice for yellow iron equipment and diesel truck owners.
Here are some of the key advantages:
70% Lighter Weight: One of the most significant benefits of lithium batteries is their lighter weight compared to lead acid and AGM batteries. This weight reduction delivers incredible weight savings that can improve fuel efficiency and reduce strain on the truck’s electrical system, making it a no-brainer for optimizing performance.
Longer Lifespan: Lithium batteries have a much longer lifespan than both lead acid and AGM batteries, and Ionic batteries typically last 2-4x times longer. Group 31 lithium batteries can last over 4000 cycles at 100% DOD. This extended lifespan translates to fewer replacements and lower long-term costs, making lithium batteries a cost-effective choice for diesel trucks.
Half the Weight: Lithium batteries are half the weight of traditional lead-acid batteries – these 3,000 CA lithium batteries are only 30.8lbs (14kg).
Increased Power: Lithium batteries provide more power than traditional batteries, making them ideal for diesel trucks and yellow iron equipment with high electrical demands. With 3,000 Cranking Amps (3 sec) and 1,800 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), these heavy duty lithium batteries deliver the performance you need.
Maintenance Free: The Ionic Lithium 12V Group 31 Heavy Duty Diesel Starter Battery typically lasts 10+ years and has a maintenance-free design.

Frequently Asked Questions
My truck has a 2-battery or 4-battery bank. Can I replace all of them with this one battery, or do I need multiple?
Most heavy-duty diesel trucks use a 2-battery or 4-battery bank wired in parallel to deliver the cold-cranking amps a big diesel engine needs. One IC-12V100-S12HD replaces roughly two lead-acid Group 31 batteries — its 3,000 CA / 1,800 CCA output exceeds what a pair of typical lead-acid Group 31 commercial batteries delivers together, and the 100Ah capacity handles the reserve needs of most single-engine truck applications.
For larger applications (4-battery banks on Peterbilt/Freightliner/Kenworth with high-draw sleeper accessories, or heavy yellow iron equipment with large starter motors), you can wire two IC-12V100-S12HD batteries in parallel to get 6,000 CA / 200Ah — matching what a 4-battery lead-acid bank does at a fraction of the weight (~61 lbs of lithium vs ~300 lbs of lead-acid).
Rule of thumb:
2× lead-acid Group 31 bank → 1× S12HD (weight savings ~90 lbs)
4× lead-acid Group 31 bank → 2× S12HD in parallel (weight savings ~180 lbs)

Will my truck's alternator overcharge this battery? Do I need to modify my charging system?
No modification required for most modern diesel trucks. The S12HD’s built-in Battery Management System (BMS) regulates charge acceptance and protects the battery from overvoltage. Standard 24V/28V-nominal heavy-duty alternators (which output 27-29V for a 2-battery series bank, or 13.8-14.4V per battery in parallel banks) charge the S12HD safely at the recommended 14.6V ceiling.
Concerns to verify before install:
Alternator output above 14.8V: If your alternator regulator is set high (common on some older mechanical-regulated units and some aftermarket high-output alternators), have it verified/adjusted to 14.4-14.6V. The BMS will protect the battery from occasional spikes but sustained overvoltage triggers protective shutdown and shortens life.
Isolators and multi-battery relays: Modern smart isolators work fine. Older diode-based isolators drop 0.5-0.7V and may prevent full charge — if using one, verify your battery sees 14.4V+ at the terminals during alternator run.
Direct-drive generator sets: If this battery is used on a residential or commercial standby generator, verify the generator’s charge circuit doesn’t hold a lead-acid-specific 13.4V-13.6V float continuously (this is fine for occasional maintenance charging, but not ideal for continuous float over months of standby).
The Ionic app shows real-time charge voltage — connect via Bluetooth and confirm your charging system delivers 14.0-14.6V during operation before deploying to fleet service.
What happens if I leave a diesel truck sitting for weeks or months without running it? Will the battery drain from parasitic loads (ECM, telematics, alarms)?
Better than lead-acid — but plan for it.
The S12HD self-discharges at less than 3% per month on its own, which means the battery itself will still be at 80%+ after 6 months of pure storage. The problem in diesel trucks is parasitic drain from onboard electronics — modern trucks with telematics units, keyless entry, alarms, and always-on ECMs can pull 30-100 mA continuously, which adds up to 20-70Ah per month depending on the load.
A 100Ah S12HD sitting on a truck with 50 mA parasitic drain would drop to BMS cut-off in roughly 2-3 months — better than a comparable lead-acid setup which typically drops below cranking voltage in 3-5 weeks, but not indefinite.
Options for long-term storage:
Use the anti-theft / battery-off feature via the Ionic app to disconnect the battery when you park it. Reconnect via app or manually before startup.
Install a battery disconnect switch at the negative terminal — traditional solution, works for any battery type.
Connect a solar maintainer or trickle charger — the Ionic 12V 2A Trickle Charger (linked in Related Products) is designed for this use case.
Emergency Start reserve provides insurance — even if the battery drains further than expected, the 25% reserve is still available for at least one crank via button/app.
Fleet operators who cycle trucks through weekly service typically don’t hit this — the concern is seasonal equipment (dump trucks, snow plows, backup generators) sitting idle for months.
Does the built-in heater actually work in extreme cold (-20°F, -30°F)?
Yes — the heater is designed to bring the battery into its charging temperature range (32°F / 0°C and above) automatically when the battery detects it’s cold and sensing incoming charge current. This lets the battery accept a charge even in Northern-tier winter conditions where lead-acid batteries would need to be pulled inside and warmed up first.
What the heater does:
Detects cell temperature via internal sensor
Activates automatically below 32°F when charge current is present
Warms cells to safe charging threshold before accepting current
Deactivates once cells reach normal operating range
Powered by the incoming charge current itself — doesn’t drain the battery to heat
What the heater doesn’t do:
Continuous heating when the battery is just sitting (no incoming charge)
Full pre-heating for cranking — the S12HD can crank even at cold soak temps (per the -20°C / -4°F operating range spec) because LiFePO4 handles brief high-current discharge in cold conditions
Real-world cold-start behavior at -30°F:
Battery cranks the engine on the discharge side (rated to -4°F, but will typically crank below spec for the short duration of a diesel start)
Alternator kicks in once engine starts
Heater activates as alternator delivers charge current
Battery warms and begins accepting charge within a few minutes of engine run
Fully replenished by the time you reach cruising temperature
For truly extreme applications (Alaska pipeline, Northern Canada oil field, Antarctic research), a battery blanket or engine block heater is still a good idea — but for typical Midwest/Northeast/Rocky Mountain winter conditions, no external heating is required.
How does the 5-year warranty work for fleet or commercial use? Does it cover truck breakdowns or vehicle downtime?
The IC-12V100-S12HD is covered by a 5-year full replacement warranty — not pro-rated, not depreciated. If the battery fails under normal use within 5 years, LithiumHub replaces it at no charge. That applies to commercial and fleet buyers as well as individual owners.
What the warranty covers:
Manufacturing defects
BMS failure
Cell failure or capacity drop below spec
Premature failure under specified operating conditions
What the warranty doesn’t cover:
Physical damage from impact, crushing, or improper installation
Overcharge damage from an alternator or charger outputting above 14.8V
Use outside the -4°F to 140°F operating range
Vehicle downtime, tow bills, or lost revenue from a failed battery (the warranty covers the battery, not consequential damage)
Fleet-specific process:
