Emergency Start
Built-in 25% reserve backup — no jumper cables needed

Most lead-acid boat batteries fail every 2–4 years. Most pontoon owners replace them twice before they sell the boat.

This is a 1,280 cranking amp LiFePO4 starter battery that weighs 25.9 lbs — about 49 lbs lighter than the lead-acid Group 31 it replaces. Drop it in your existing battery box. No wiring changes. Comnpatible with all major brands.

It also does three things your current battery can’t:

  • Monitors itself. The Ionic Red Battery app shows your battery’s charge level from your phone — check it from your truck before you back the boat down the ramp.
  • Heats itself in winter. The battery management system (BMS) activates an internal heater below 32°F automatically so that it can accept a charge even in cold climates. Leave it in the boat all winter. Turn the key in the spring.
  • Backs itself up. If your charging system fails on the water, long-press the Emergency Start button or tap it in the app to activate a built-in reserve that cranks the motor. No jumper cables. No tow bill. Peace of mind wherever you are. Just press the button on the battery to activate or use your phone to access the app.

Covered by a 5-year full replacement warranty. Backed by US-based support. Most owners will sell the boat before they need a new battery.

Nearly 50 lbs lighter than a comparable lead-acid Group 31. Same Group 31 footprint — drops in without modification.

Bluetooth Monitoring

Ionic Red Battery app (iOS & Android, free, no subscription). Check your battery’s charge level from your phone using built-in bluetooth technology — from the dock, from the truck, before you ever touch the key.

Emergency Start Reserve

Long-press the red button or tap the app. A dedicated reserve activates to crank the motor when your charging system fails. Handles the failures that actually happen on the water.

Built-In Self-Heater

The BMS activates an internal heater below 32°F automatically so that the battery can accept a charge even when it’s below freezing. Leave it in the boat all winter with no issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the 12V 40Ah S9 marine starter battery?

The S12M (this battery) is a dual-purpose 100Ah unit — it cranks your outboard and runs your house loads, fishfinder, livescope, and accessories all day from a single Group 31 battery. At 25.9 lbs it replaces both your starter battery and house battery on a single-bank pontoon, cabin cruiser, or center console.

The S9 12V 40Ah is a cranking-focused starter battery40Ah capacity, smaller and lighter, optimized for boats that already have a separate deep cycle house battery and just need a dedicated cranker. It delivers 1,400 CA (slightly higher than the S12M’s 1,280 CA) but with less reserve capacity for running electronics.

Pick the S12M if: you want one battery to do everything — start the motor and run electronics — without installing a dual-bank setup. Common on pontoons, smaller cabin boats, and bay boats with single-battery wiring.

Pick the S9 if: you already have a deep cycle house battery (or are buying one) and want the lightest, most cranking-focused dedicated starter for performance-oriented setups like bass boats with separate trolling/electronics batteries.

If my charging system fails on the water, how many engine starts will the Emergency Start reserve give me?

Plenty to get you home.

The Emergency Start function activates a 25% reserve that bypasses the normal BMS cutoff — that’s roughly 25Ah of dedicated cranking power still available even when the main pack is reading “empty.” A typical 4-stroke outboard crank draws about 150-250 amps for half a second to two seconds, which translates to roughly 0.05-0.1Ah per start. The math works out to dozens of crank attempts available from the reserve alone.

In real-world use, the Emergency Start is designed to get you off the water and back to the dock — not for unlimited cranking. If you’ve activated it, something upstream has failed (alternator, charge controller, wiring fault, BMS protection trigger), and the underlying issue needs to be addressed before your next trip. Long-press the red button on the battery or tap “Emergency Start” in the IonicRedBattery app to activate it when needed.

How long does it take to fully charge an empty battery?

Charging time depends on the charger you’re using:

  • Ionic 12V 10A → ~10-12 hours
  • Ionic 12V 20A → ~5-6 hours
  • Ionic 12V 30A → ~3-4 hours
  • 50A charger (recommended rate) → ~2 hours
  • Typical outboard alternator (40-60A while running) → ~2-3 hours of run time

The battery accepts up to 200A maximum charge current, so theoretically a high-output charger or a heavy-duty alternator can fully charge it in just over 30 minutes — but the 50A recommended rate balances charging speed with battery longevity. For most pontoon owners, the Ionic 12V 10A or 20A is the right pairing for overnight or weekend recharging at the dock.

In real-world use, a day of running the boat with the alternator output keeps the battery topped up — most owners only need a wall charger for end-of-season storage prep or after a long electronics-heavy day.

Can I leave a maintenance / trickle charger connected all winter like I did with my lead-acid battery?

No — and you don’t need to. LiFePO4 batteries behave differently from lead-acid in storage, and continuous trickle/float charging actually shortens lithium battery life rather than extending it.

Here’s what to do instead:

  • Charge to full at the end of the season, then disconnect the charger. The internal BMS handles long-term storage management on its own.
  • LiFePO4 self-discharges at less than 3% per month — a fully charged battery will still be at 80%+ after six months of dormant storage.
  • The built-in self-heater lets you leave the battery in the boat through the winter without worrying about cold-temperature damage.
  • Check the IonicRedBattery app every 1-2 months during storage. If voltage drops below ~12.8V (about 50% state of charge), connect a lithium-compatible smart charger that stops at 14.6V (not a continuous float charger) and bring it back to full.

If you must leave a charger connected, only use a LiFePO4-compatible smart charger (like the Ionic 12V chargers) that recognizes when the battery is full and stops, rather than holding it at a float voltage indefinitely. Lead-acid-style float chargers running above 14.6V continuously will trigger the BMS’s voltage cut-off and may shorten cell life over time.

Can I install this myself, or do I need a marine technician?

This is a DIY install for almost every pontoon owner. It’s designed as a drop-in Group 31 replacement — same footprint, same terminal positions, same polarity, same wiring as the lead-acid it replaces.

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2″ or 9/16″ socket or wrench for the terminal bolts
  • A torque wrench is recommended (terminals torque to 80-100 in-lbs / 9-11 N·m — don’t over-tighten or you’ll strip the threaded studs)
  • Your existing battery cables — no special lithium-specific hardware required

Installation steps:

  1. Disconnect the negative (black) cable from your old battery first, then positive (red)
  2. Lift out the old lead-acid (the S12M weighs about a third of what you just removed)
  3. Drop the S12M into the same battery box
  4. Connect positive (red) first, then negative (black) — torque both to spec
  5. Power on the battery and pair via the IonicRedBattery app (takes under 2 minutes)
  6. Turn the key — the motor starts

When you might want a marine tech:

  • Upgrading your alternator or charging system at the same time
  • Adding a dual-battery isolator or auto-charging relay
  • Re-wiring a complex multi-battery house bank
  • Boat is under warranty and the dealer requires certified install for warranty preservation

For a straight one-for-one battery swap on a typical pontoon, most owners are running in under 30 minutes with basic hand tools. The terminals are clearly marked + and -, and the IonicRedBattery app will confirm correct polarity and full voltage as soon as you power on.
